Many homework questions for science courses boil down to chasing units through convoluted algebraic mazes. Often, if you keep the units in the calculations, you’ll see whether you’ve been applying the right formula and you’ll see a path through the storm.
If your math is solid.
In college, I worked a work-study position as the chemistry computer lab assistant. I got paid to do my homework, refill the printer paper, and politely tell chemists not to bring food into this lab, either (don’t bring food into any chemistry lab in general). One of my friends there was a senior in the chemistry department, and he regaled me with the difficulty of his homework. I asked to see the hardest problem, recognized the Calculus being applied, and solved it.
Physics definitely applies math concepts. If you have the calculus foundation (or are working on it), then entire sets of formulas get distilled into families of derivatives and anti-derivatives. If you don’t have the calculus foundation, then you have to work a little harder to see the relationships between formulas. Units are crucial.
In my mind, Biology and Earth Sciences both have to do with dynamics, from the cause and effect of plate tectonics to the mechanisms in a cell. I like discussing these concepts with students.
